Description by Penny Georgiou

There have been some interesting developments since our (the SFL’s) last encounter on this topic of, Science, Psychoanalysis and Reality (May 15th 2024)prompting further openings for exploration.

On this occasion, our common point of reference will be a conversation between Terrence Howard and his Interlocutor, Joe Rogan (uploaded May 18th 2024). The talk can be found on Youtube: Joe Rogan Experience #2152 Terrence Howard Full Interview.

I was made aware of the talk by a family member (26th May 2024). A few minutes after it ended, an idea occurred to me associating The Function of Suffering, The Role of the Object, The Body, and The Other’s Delusion. This will be my starting point for a conversation marking a few dimensions that may be of interest for an analysand; for one agreed in considering their ‘original experience’ (Lacan, Seminar III, Chapter IVwith the due care and attention it calls for.

The ideas that Howard’s work raises are extensive and – for some – controversial. The talk invites a wide audience to consider an arrangement of ideas concerning many topics, including mathematics, geometry, physics, music, metaphysics and more, thereby offering varied points of entry for a listener.

Perhaps, what makes his ideas more controversial than usual is the material proofs that he is claiming (eg, potential technological and industrial applications). This material dimension remains a pivotal threshold in the field of how we term ‘reality’, since material consequences – however they come to touch upon our experience – force us to pay attention. In psychoanalysis, we recognise such material consequences in the form of our suffering and our symptoms that disrupt how we think we want to live our everyday life.
